Free People ~ ⵉⵎⴰⵣⵉⵖⵏ~

Honouring Indigenous Wisdom

The series Free People ~ ⵉⵎⴰⵣⵉⵖⵏ~ is a mixed-media collection dedicated to the indigenous Amazigh people of Morocco. It is a profound exploration of a worldview that sees nature not as a resource, but as a living, sacred system. This work seeks to bridge the gap between contemporary art and ancient “Deep Nature” connection, rooted in the belief that our survival depends on remembering our inherent bond with the Earth.

Materials of the Land
To honour the authenticity of this connection, the series is crafted using traditional, ceremonial materials. I work with henna, turmeric, and indigo, blending them with raw elements gathered directly from the Moroccan landscape: olive, mint, palm, sand, and rose. These are not just pigments; they are carriers of history and intention, grounding each piece in the soil and the stories of the people.

Matriarchal Wisdom & Ecological Balance
Central to this series is the celebration of the vital role of women within Amazigh society. The balance between nature and matriarchal influence serves as a blueprint for community resilience and cultural continuity. By focusing on these themes, the work “decentres” Western individualistic narratives, offering instead a vision of a society where the feminine and the ecological are inextricably linked.

The Agadir Peace Forum
I was deeply honoured to debut this collection as the Guest of Honour at the International Peace Forum of Visual Arts in Agadir. This series serves as my contribution to the global dialogue on peace, tolerance, and intercultural exchange—proving that when we listen to indigenous voices, we find the tools to re-imagine a sustainable and harmonious future.

“This series is a lived dialogue with the land and a tribute to the ‘Free People’ who have guarded its sacred rhythms for millennia.”
